On May 31, 2022, Phra Dr. Nicholas Thanissaro attended the University of Surrey to teach Buddhist meditation and mindfulness. These teachings were part of a psychology study by the university students, who were split into 2 groups of 20 people each.
Phra Dr Nicholas introduced and taught the subjects of mental training and also educating the mind and brain. As humans, we cannot see our own minds but are able to gain a deep perception through the six senses. In order to tame the mind, we must practice bringing our minds back to the centre of the body as often as we can to remind ourselves where our minds are at the present moment. We were taught that life does not end with death only. Phra Dr Nicholas then introduced methods of practicing meditation and mindfulness techniques.
This was the first time that a teaching monk has visited the University of Surrey, and the response of the students to this event was extremely positive.
